Stories from the frontline

Emergency Shelter

Daniel, 38

Melbourne, Victoria

Secured stable housing within 6 months
"I hadn't slept in a bed for two years. The night I walked into that shelter, I cried. Not from sadness — from relief. Someone had made sure that place existed."

Daniel lost his job and then his rental in the same month. Within weeks he was sleeping in his car, then on the street. A Bren Foundation-funded emergency shelter in Melbourne's inner north gave him a safe bed, meals, and access to a case worker who helped him navigate Centrelink and find transitional housing. Eighteen months later, Daniel is renting a studio apartment and working part-time in logistics.

Outreach & Case Management

Priya, 29

Sydney, New South Wales

Family kept together, children remained in school
"I didn't know help existed. I thought I just had to survive. The outreach worker found me — I didn't find them."

Priya fled a domestic violence situation with her two young children and spent three weeks couch-surfing before running out of options. An outreach team funded through the Bren Foundation connected her with crisis accommodation, legal support, and a family violence specialist. Her children remained enrolled in school throughout. Priya now lives in community housing and is completing a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education.

Transitional Housing

Terry, 54

Brisbane, Queensland

Reunited with family, gained employment
"Transitional housing sounds like a stepping stone. For me it was a lifeline. It gave me time to become a person again before the world expected me to function in it."

After a decade of rough sleeping following the breakdown of his marriage, Terry had lost confidence, connection, and hope. A transitional housing program supported by the Bren Foundation gave him a private room, structured support, and a pathway plan. Over twelve months he rebuilt his identity — reconnecting with his adult daughter, completing a forklift licence, and eventually moving into a long-term rental with a housemate.

Youth Outreach

Anika, 22

Adelaide, South Australia

Independent rental secured, enrolled in further education
"I aged out of foster care with nowhere to go. The system just... ended. The outreach team didn't."

Anika entered homelessness at 18 when her foster placement ended. With no family support and no rental history, she was unable to secure housing independently. A youth-focused outreach service funded by the Bren Foundation provided her with supported accommodation, financial literacy coaching, and mentoring. She is now 22, renting independently, and studying nursing at TAFE.

The work continues

These stories represent a fraction of the lives touched by the charities we fund. Homelessness is not inevitable — it is a policy failure, a funding failure, and a failure of will. The Bren Foundation exists to fill the gap until that changes.
